It’s that time of the year in this part of the world folks - yup, summertime is well and truly here.
With it - joys abound - from bobbing poppies at the edge of ripening fields of wheat, to glorious soft long summer nights, to the amazing bounties springing up in my garden from day- to -day - I sometimes find it hard to even take in all the amazing-ness sprouting up all around me. Such an expansion and celebration!
Summer is also a time many head for the beach and so with a little nod and a dash of tongue in ‘cheek’ I decided to call this post ‘Beach-ready body scrub’.
It’s a funny term isn’t it - to be “beach ready.”
It kind of got me thinking as to what exactly being ‘beach-ready’ means to me.
I guess I’d have to start with the beach.
It should first and foremost be empty - no beach umbrellas, no sun loungers, no ice-cream stalls… and come to think of it, no new age hippies strumming guitars or singing mantras on it, either.
It should be far away from roads, from hotels, and should preferably be accessible only with a 2 hour walk over hills or through forests from a remote car park.
It should have a view of, well - nothing - no industrial trawlers or oil tankers ( believe me, I was on beaches where this is all you saw).
It should be sunny with a light breeze but not so much that you will get sand in your sandwiches.
And as far as me ‘being ready’, I would happiest in a pair of cut off shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of crocs.
Yup, that’s me ‘beach ready’.
Of course, beaches and being ‘beach-ready’ may mean many other things to many people - but whatever it means to you and whatever your taste in beaches, the topic of today’s post, ‘my beach-ready’ body scrub might come in handy.
It smells divine and when you rub it into your skin, it gently scrubs away all dead skin and moisturizes at the same time leaving you all smooth, lovey and fragrant.
Now it might not be something you ever thought of doing, but making your own cosmetics is super easy, super simple, super amazing and… super cheap.
Because you know, if you go to some fancy shop in town you can buy these ‘homemade’ scrubs for large amounts of money. In fact, I remember in my “London girl days” reading about a ‘salt scrub’ in the pages of Vogue, saving up my hard earned cash, then heading off the Selfridges to buy such a pot and feeling like I was coming back home with gold dust.
I never once thought about the ingredients in this ‘must-have’ product but looking back I was basically paying out for a pot of salt and oil.
So yes, making your own homemade scrubs makes sense and not only that it’s fun and quick and they make great presents, too!
This can be thrown together in a matter of minutes and keeps for ages.
A short word of warning before we start, when using, do make sure you wipe out the shower or bathtub afterwards … the oil is heaven but can make surfaces a little slippery.
So, let’s get scrubbing:
INGREDIENTS for 2 small mason jars (one for you - one for a present)
1 1/2 cups of fine salt (if you want a pinkish tinge, use Himalaya - otherwise, Atlantic is fine)
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
the grated peel of 2 lemons
10 - 20 drops citrus oil (I use grapefruit)
a tablespoon chopped rosemary or a few edible flower petals ( optional)
- grate the lemons
- add peel to coconut oil in a pan and heat very gently
- remove from heat and leave to sit for a few minutes to let the lemon aroma enter the oil
- add oil to salt and mix around
- now add your essential oil ( I do this gradually and my rule of thumb is to stop adding when the strong coconut smell is balanced by the smell of the citrus oil - as in so many cases - trust your nose)
- if using, add rosemary and flower petals
- pour into two jars
- that’s it - I told you it was simple!
Enjoy and whatever summer or beaches or ‘being beach ready’ means to you, have a wonderful time!
